The Sound of Sunday has been broadcast on Hospital Radio Basingstoke every Sunday afternoon since March 2991. The show celebrated its 25th anniversary in March 2016, and also its 1000th edition with a special live show from Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in East London.
The Sound of Sunday Summer Show was first on the air in 1998 and 1999 and then 2001. The original premise of the show was to celebrate summer, and reflect what was happening in the summer time in Basingstoke.
In February 2020, we set about bringing the show back for 2020 with the aim being to present the show from some of the many events happening around the Basingstoke and Alton area, some of which we had been regular visitors to in the past. With many events cancelled though, those plans had to be curtailed, and the series consisted of 4 x 1 hour shows remembering summers of the past. We presented highlights of our coverage of the Alton Lions Party in the Park, the Froyle Fete and the Alton Classic Car Show along with our live show from Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.
Series 5 in 2021 had more events to preview and the final show was recorded at the Alton Lions Party in the Park.
Series 6 in 2022 and series 7 in 2023 both had 3 editions.
This once a year show has been compiled and produced by Studio 63 Media for a number of years. The show is compiled from requests collected by HRB over the course of 11 months from January to the end of November and is broadcast just after Christmas.
The show includes a competition to guess the number one and during the final hour, the winner is recorded introducing that number one and receiving their prize. That recording is then played back going into the number 1 song. The method for doing this is now tried and tested and the idea came from how the weekend prize draw is produced on a Sunday afternoon. The challenge is to record that final link and get back to the studio and get it on air before the end of the show in a chart show which is quite complicated to produce.
The chart for the full year is updated and released in January.
Due to not being able to visit the wards in 2020 and 2021, the show was recorded in advance without the competition element. The same format applied in 2022.
In 2023, the show was back live with the return of the competition to guess the number one.
To celebrate The Sound of Sunday’s 30 years on the air in 2021, we created this show as an add-on to the main show each Sunday for two months.
The extra hour featured some highlights of different aspects of the show from the last 30 years, from our documentary about the cartoon series Mysterious Cities of Gold, to the quiz that lasted 10 years – The Sound of Sunday Saturday Morning TV Super Quiz. The show started on 31 January and concluded with a Best of the Guests on 28 March 2021 running for 7 editions as Residents Requests was broadcast instead on 7 February and 7 March.
The name has been retained as an online podcast that is made available to listen to and download from The Sound of Sunday’s website every Sunday evening. It usually consists of an episode of Superman 1940s Style, which was originaly part of the main show for about 12 years. Due to the fact that the audio quality of later episodes was not as good, we made the decision to make it available online only.
The Extra Time podcast has now come to an end.
A brand new show which launched on Hospital Radio Basingstoke on 3 April 2021. The show plays upbeat dance and disco favourites every Saturday night for 2 hours, and includes a bit of chat about the weekend and what else is happening.
The show completed two series as of February 2022.
We have been developing a new show which will eventually become a stand-alone show in its own right.
The Community Hour is a 60 minute look at what is happening in Basingstoke and chat with local organisations, groups and charities who want some extra publicity on the radio to promote themselves, events they are organising or just look for members.
We hope to bring this show back in some form at a later date.
